A conceptual model is a representation of a system.

It is developed by composing concepts that are used to help people know, understand or simulate the subject matter represented by the model itself, and includes the important entities and the relationships between them.

In design, the conceptual model is what the designer relies on to get closer to the user’s mental model.

The further a designer’s mental model is from the user’s mental model, the more complex the conceptual model is and the more difficult the experience is to understand.
