Design patterns are common solutions to common design problems.
The repetition of these patterns makes them become part of the user’s mental model.
They are constantly evolving, and that is why some innovative patterns have not yet been assimilated into the mental model of users and it is when designers adopt them (and repeat them) that they are gradually included in the mental model of more users.
