What are cookies and what are they used for?

A cookie is a text file that is downloaded to your computer/ smartphone/ tablet or electronic device with Internet access when you access certain web pages. These cookies allow you to browse the website easily and smoothly by storing and retrieving information about your browsing habits or searches performed from your computer in order to speed up subsequent browsing or searches. The fj.digital website has cookies that remain on the visitor’s computer for different periods of time. Some expire at the end of each session and others remain longer so that when you revisit the site, it is easier for you to find what you were interested in.

The cookies we use, the purpose for which we use them and their duration over time are set out below:

Google Analytics

Its function is to measure user interactions on websites. Google Analytics is a simple, easy-to-use tool that helps website owners measure how users interact with site content. When a user navigates through the pages of a website, Google Analytics provides the website owner with JavaScript tags (libraries) to record information about the page a user has viewed; for example, the URL of the page. Google Analytics JavaScript libraries use HTTP cookies to “remember” what a user has done on previous pages or interactions with the website.

Google Analytics supports two JavaScript libraries (tags) to measure website usage: analytics.js and ga.js.

The following sections describe how each of these libraries uses cookies.

analytics.js: use of cookies

The analytics.js JavaScript library is part of Universal Analytics and uses its own cookies to:

  • Distinguish unique users
  • Limit the percentage of requests

When using the recommended JavaScript snippet, analytics.js sets cookies at the highest level domain it can. For example, if your website address is blog.example.co.uk, analytics.js will set the cookie domain to .example.co.uk. Setting cookies at the highest possible level domain allows you to track users across multiple subdomains without adding additional configuration.

Note: analytics.js does not require cookies to be set to transmit data to Google Analytics.

analytics.js sets the following cookies:

Cookie name Duration Description
_ga 2 years Used to distinguish users.
_gid 24 hours Used to distinguish users.
_gat 1 minute Used to limit the percentage of requests.
AMP_TOKEN 30 seconds to 1 year Includes a token that can be used to retrieve a client ID from the AMP Client ID service. Other possible values indicate disables, in-progress requests, or errors obtained when retrieving an ID from the AMP Client ID service.
_gac_<property-id> 90 days Includes user-related campaign information. If you have linked your Google Analytics and AdWords accounts, website conversion tags will read this cookie unless you disable it. Read more

ga.js: use of cookies

The ga.js JavaScript library uses its own cookies to:

  • Determine the domain to be measured
  • Distinguish unique users
  • Limit the percentage of requests
  • Remember the number and duration of previous visits
  • Remember traffic source information
  • Determine the start and end of a session
  • Remembering the value of custom visitor variables

By default, this library sets cookies on the domain specified in the browser’s document.host property and sets the cookie path at the root (/) level.

This library sets the following cookies:

Cookie name Default duration Description
__utma 2 years from configuration or update Used to distinguish users and sessions. The cookie is created when the JavaScript library is executed and there is no __utma cookie. The cookie is updated each time data is sent to Google Analytics.
__utmt 10 minutes Used to limit the percentage of requests.
__utmb 30 minutes from configuration or update Used to determine new sessions or visits. The cookie is created when the JavaScript library is executed and there is no __utmb cookie. The cookie is updated each time data is sent to Google Analytics.
__utmc End of browser session Not used in ga.js. It is set to interact with urchin.js. Previously, this cookie acted in conjunction with the __utmb cookie to determine if the user was in a new session or visit.
__utmz 6 months from configuration or update Stores the traffic source or campaign that explains how the user came to the site. The cookie is created when the JavaScript library is executed and is updated each time data is sent to Google Analytics.
__utmv 2 years from configuration or update Two years from configuration or update Used to store visitor custom variable data. This cookie is created when a programmer uses the _setCustomVar method with a visitor custom variable. It was also used for the retired _setVar method. The cookie is updated each time data is sent to Google Analytics.

Cookie Control

Browsers offer the functionality of deleting cookies, as well as occasionally setting cookies from sites that the user is willing to accept. Consult the “help” section of the browsers for the most convenient configuration.
